Youth Opportunities

Our Music Education Philosophy

The City of Fairfax Band Association is proud of its tradition of involving young musicians of Northern Virginia. Each year, the Association offers a scholarship to an outstanding high school musician through the Young Artist Competition.  Every summer the Association hosts the Children’s Concert, featuring music for children. Students are always admitted free to all our concerts.

We are fortunate to have among our ranks many dedicated and talented music educators and students, and lots of very supportive parents, who value music education for children and teens.

Invite CFBA Into Your Classroom

Northern Virginia school band directors can contact CFBA to schedule a “side-by-side” experience with CFBA musicians. We can arrange to play with your students in rehearsal or conduct sectional rehearsals. The goals of these “side-by-side” sessions include modeling the impact of music in the community and demonstrating that music can be part of students’ lives when they are adults no matter what profession they choose.

City of Fairfax Band Association adult band members who participate in this program are current or former Fairfax County band directors, retired musicians from Washington, DC military bands, private teachers, and musicians with advanced musical training and playing experience.

Please contact Jeanne Crowley at jmcrowley@fcps.edu, or leave a message at 571-336-2322 if you would like to invite CFBA into your classroom. We look forward to hearing from you.

Young Artists Competition

Since 1996, the CFBA has sponsored the Young Artist Competition to encourage the development of outstanding high school musicians who plan to pursue a musical career. The winner of the annual competition will feature as guest soloist at the City of Fairfax Band May concert and receive a financial award of $2,000 to support the young musician’s future musical endeavors. The second place winner will receive a $500 cash prize.
