Northern Virginia Youth Winds

NVYW is comprised of 8th-12th grade woodwind, brass, and percussion students selected by audition. Members enjoy participation in an advanced ensemble that operates similarly to adult ensembles, preparing varied and full-length concert programs in a short period of weekly rehearsals.  The youth division benefits from occasional interaction with members from the association’s adult ensembles, most frequently via side-by-side rehearsals where adults will sit in for new music reading sessions at the start of a concert cycle.  NVYW also enlists the assistance of two or three college or young professional musicians each season who participate as mentor players.  NVYW members come from the school systems of Fairfax, Loudoun, and Arlington counties, Falls Church City schools, and many private, parochial, and home schools throughout the region.
