Children’s Concert 2019

PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE OF LOCATION: DUE TO SOGGY WEATHER. THE CHILDREN’S CONCERT HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE STACY C. SHERWOOD CENTER, 3740 Old Lee Hwy, Fairfax, VA 22030.

A fun and free summer tradition is coming up this week:  the annual City of Fairfax Band Association Children’s Concert!  Each year, this organization hosts a fun community event to celebrate summer and keep kids interested in music. The concert has been moved indoors to the Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center, 3740 Old Lee Hwy, Fairfax, VA 22030

The show is appropriate for all ages but is geared to children, with classical songs most young patrons will recognize, along with other kid-friendly music.  Selections tend to be brief and lively and are a fun way to introduce kids to live music and to encourage their interest in performing arts.

To give them a chance to explore the various instruments and sounds of a band, right before the concert the City of Fairfax Band Association hosts an instrument “petting zoo.” Children get to see various instruments up-close, try them out themselves, and talk to the musicians about how they make music.

Pre-concert festivities, starting at 6:30, include balloons for kids and free ice cream for all. The concert itself begins at 7:30. There are usually event sponsors present as well, who may hand out fun goodies at their booths. The Children’s Concert is one of our favorite events in the City of Fairfax!

Tips for attending:

  • Arrive early so you can enjoy the free ice cream and instrument petting zoo starting at 6:30.
  • Bring a blanket to put on the lawn and a picnic to enjoy during the show.
  • Plan to change locations in case of weather: if it rains, the performance will be moved indoors at the nearby Sherwood Community Center.
