Music and Community

As performers themselves, members of the CFBA ensembles actively support performing arts in the Fairfax community and in the greater Northern Virginia and Washington DC metropolitan area. Under their talented and experienced musical leadership, CFBA ensembles have entertained the citizens of Fairfax, the Commonwealth of Virginia (including Richmond, Yorktown, Orkney Springs, and Fredericksburg), Pennsylvania and the Washington, DC metropolitan area for 45 years.

The Musicians

Members represent varying musical backgrounds and come together to provide the highest quality wind band music at affordable rates. Performers representing a wide range of ages and from all walks of life share the love of music, bringing their solid musical experience and backgrounds to the organization.

The Music

Programs are varied and present the best in classical transcriptions, wind band music, military and marches, show tunes, and much more. The band is proud to sponsor new compositions and to showcase new arrangements at every season. Fairfax Band concerts frequently feature exciting and well-known guest artists.

Ensembles include two adult concert bands: the nationally renowned City of Fairfax Concert Band and the newer adult Main Street Community Band. The Northern Virginia Youth Winds includes two student honor bands, The Symphonic Winds and Junior Winds. Smaller ensembles serving the community are the internationally acclaimed German band "Alte Kameraden," the Fairfax Swing Band, the Fairfax Saxophone Quartet, and the Main Street Brass Quintet.

The Community

The association enriches the musical life of the community by providing a full indoor subscription concert series and a summer outdoor concert series, as well as by performing at civic festivals, patriotic programs, and commemorative ceremonies.

On top of sponsoring the two honor bands for youth, the organization supports music education in the schools and community and annually sponsors and conducts a Young Artist Competition, with winners selected from high school senior- and junior-class entrants who play wind and percussion instruments. The Young Artist winner is featured as guest soloist in the City of Fairfax Band spring concert and receives a financial award to be applied towards furthering the student's individual music education. The annual summer Children's Concert is preceded by an Instrument Petting Zoo.
