Mission
To stimulate, promote and develop interest in the musical environments, educate the general public in the musical environment and advance the national culture in the musical environment through the performance of, and education in the wind and percussion ensemble, and symphonic band musical literatures; and to provide opportunity for development of individual musicianship and musical skills; and for individual musical expression and enjoyment of music among its membership and the general public.
Our musicians come from many different backgounds. They are engineers, educators, military, IT professionals, recent college grads, parents and grandparents, and retired professionals who come together in the middle of the busy work week to rehearse, perform, and enjoy playing music together. Under talented and professional leadership the bands have entertained the Fairfax community, Washington, DC and suburbs , and the greater mid-Atlantic for over 50 years.
In addition to a youth honor band, the organization supports, the organization supports music education in the schools and community and annually sponsors and conducts a Young Artist Competition, with winners selected from high school senior- and junior-class entrants who play wind and percussion instruments. The Young Artist winner is featured as guest soloist in the City of Fairfax Band spring concert and receives a financial award to be applied towards furthering the student’s individual music education. The annual summer Children’s Concert is preceded by an Instrument Petting Zoo.
The association enriches the musical life of the community by providing a full indoor subscription concert series and a summer outdoor concert series, as well as by performing at civic festivals, patriotic programs, and commemorative ceremonies.
