Our talented youth band, the Northern Virginia Youth Winds, presents its second concert of the 2021-22 season. After almost two years of COVID protocols, the band is growing.
With the exception of a lively pasodoble, El Relicario by Jose Padilla, this program features works written originally for band. The concert will open with Joyful Variations, an overture by Brian Beck constructed loosely around Beethoven’s Ode to Joy theme. Puszta by Jan Van der Roost will be the longest work, consisting of four “gypsy dances” that are equal parts lyrical and fun. The most unique selection is also the most uniquely-titled: Melodious Thunk by David Biedenbender, inspired by the famous jazz pianist. Big, fat thunks are interspersed with pointy, clunky, bluesy blips and a laid-back melody.
