This study of the first 25 years of the City of Fairfax Band, through the eyes of its conductor for 22 of those years, provides a detailed examination of five major areas:
  • Performances given and preparation and circumstances leading up to their presentation
  • Criteria for selecting music, a general analysis of it, programming the music for various occasions, purchasing and handling it, and rehearsal performances and procedures
  • The band's musicians, their backgrounds and occupations, changes in the band's membership and rules governing this membership, and the social aspect of the band's function
  • Six small ensembles in the band and what they did, and
  • The City of Fairfax Band Association, its evolution, and how it functioned in administering the band's managerial and financial activities
Extensive appendix materials present the circumstances of, and the participants in, the over 300 concert band performances during this period, along with guest conductors, soloists, ensembles, and announcers and narrators appearing with the band. Eighty-one concert programs are given, as well as a list of original band music played, and several other music-related documents. Supplementary documentation is also provided tracing the band's development from the late 1960s through the 1992-93 season.
From a collection of hundreds of photographs available, some contributed by band members, 32 pages of pictures, mainly snapshots, help to trace the band's history from its earliest days.
