The Just Jazz Septet
An Ensemble of The City of Fairfax Band
|
Just Jazz was organized in November 1993 to play - as its name implies - all kinds of jazz from early ragtime and Dixieland through swing, bebop and the California "cool school". The group has played for various civic, charity, and private functions, including a DAR Banquet (1994); Summer Lawn Concerts at Veteran's Amphitheater at Fairfax City Hall (1996, 1997, 1998); the City of Fairfax 4th of July Parade (1996, 1997, 1998); The Margaret Shouse Memorial Concert at the entrance to Wolf Trap (1996); the 50th Anniversary Gala of the CIA Retirees Association (1997); and the Mayor of Fairfax's Spotlight on the Arts Gala (1998). This group's instrumentation allows it to swing like a big band on Ellington, Basie, Miller, and Goodman tunes, or to get a more intimate combo sound for Dixieland and for the complex music of composers such as Miles Davis, Tadd Dameron, Johnny Mandel, or Thelonious Monk. Just Jazz seeks to encompass as much as possible the great diversity and variety of American jazz from its origins to the present. |
