Song and Dance
Featuring the 2015 Young Artist Competition Winner

City of Fairfax Band
Conductor: Robert Pouliot
Guest Artist: Hunter Lorelli, Bassoon, 2015 YAC Winner
sponsor, Cardinal BankHost: Rich Kleinfeldt
This concert is supported in part by Cardinal Bank.

WT Woodson High School
9525 Main Street
Fairfax, Virginia

The dance suite is one of the oldest forms of musical expression. Ever since Mendelssohn's collection of Original Melodies for Pianoforte was re-titled Songs Without Words, the instrumental "song" has become a genre in its own right. On this program we feature two such modern collections: Robert Russell Bennett's Symphonic Songs, incorporating distinctly American song styles, and Ira Hearshen's Divertimento, a collection of dance styles ranging from march to mambo. The program also features the winner of the 2015 City of Fairfax Band Young Artist Competition, Hunter Lorelli, in performance with the band. Join us for a sweet surprise as we wrap up the celebration of the 45th Anniversary Season.

Hunter Lorelli, Bassoon, 2015 YAC Winner

Hunter Lorelli, age 18, is a senior at West Springfield High School in Springfield, Va, where he is principal bassoon of the Wind Symphony and the Full Symphony. He is currently principal bassoon of the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. Lorelli studies bassoon with Kelly Stratil, bassoonist in the Capital Wind Symphony and prominent bassoon teacher in the Northern Virginia area. Hunter attended the Interlochen Advanced Bassoon Institute in the summer of 2014. He holds many leadership positions in his school band program including band manager. Lorelli made the Senior Regional Orchestra as principal bassoon for two years and the All District and All State ensembles for the past three years. He continues to participate in competitions and performances throughout the DC area and was a finalist in both the Army and Navy Band Young Artist Concerto Competitions in 2015.

Lorelli is a member of the American Sign Language and Tri-M Honor Societies and enjoys participating in outreach activities that extend the arts to the community. In his free time he enjoys singing, continuing to study flute repertoire and making bassoon reeds!

Next year Lorelli will attend the Cleveland Institute of Music to study with Barrick Stees of the Cleveland Orchestra.
